Simple system, major benefits

MiCROTEC’s Truespin scanner is based on the same measuring principle as the Logeye Stereo. However, while the Logeye Stereo measures the log perpendicular to the axis, the Truespin is designed for saw lines with a longitudinal infeed. “The Truespin scanner is equipped with two cameras that are pointed at the log. No lasers are used, which significantly simplifies handling,” Axel Creuzberger, MiCROTEC Area Sales Manager for German-speaking countries, explains.
Real-time monitoring and correction
The Truespin detects and monitors log rotation in real time as soon as the log enters the saw line’s infeed unit. Using digital cameras, the scanner recognizes and tracks the external texture of the log without the need for additional markings.
Several years ago, the CT Log was the driving force behind the development of the Truespin. “With our log scanner, we can detect all wood characteristics, even inside the log, and generate an optimal cutting pattern based on the obtained information. This is the first crucial step toward increasing yield. Back then, though, there was no monitoring of log rotation to ensure that each log is cut in the best way possible. This is now possible with the Truespin scanner,” Creuzberger tells us.
Complete integration
Typically, a MiCROTEC Logeye scanner for 3D log measurement is installed upstream of the saw line. An optimization solution uses the 3D data to calculate the ideal cutting pattern and transmits this information to the Truespin. The system then reports the necessary correction to the PLC in real time. The Truespin scanner operates completely independently of the machinery manufacturer – the system can be integrated into virtually any plant or production line. In this context, MiCROTEC also highlights the easy installation: Upon request, MiCROTEC also handles the complete integration into the PLC control system, thus acting as a one-stop shop for this comprehensive solution.
The Truespin is based on stereoscopy technology: Like human vision, stereoscopic imaging facilitates digital 3D reconstruction by combining two slightly different images of the same log surface. MiCROTEC scanners utilize this principle to achieve unparalleled precision in log measurement, enabling sawmills to optimize production even before the first cut is made.
No production downtime
Since the installation of the Truespin does not require any mechanical intervention, there is virtually no interruption of production. Furthermore, the scanner effectively compensates for slippage, even with worn infeed units. MiCROTEC guarantees high turning accuracy with a deviation of less than 2°. “We know from experience that we can achieve an even smaller deviation, depending on the plant configuration,” Creuzberger emphasizes. As the system provides data in real time, there is no loss in performance during cutting – even at feed speeds of up to 180 m/min. “We have already installed several Truespin scanners, both at new and at existing plants, and customer feedback has been consistently positive,” Creuzberger says.
With the Truespin scanner, sawmill operators can correct and monitor the turning angle in real time. The system provides reliable data on actual log movements, even at conveyor junction points with longer distances between measurement and infeed. MiCROTEC recommends monitoring not only the turning unit itself. Upon request, several modules can be installed in a cascading way, seamlessly covering the entire relevant area – from the infeed of the measuring conveyor to the area behind the centering unit – through a flexible layout. This way, any changes in position can be detected before the actual rotation and taken into account by the control system. Once the log rotation has been completed, the system also checks whether the rotation position is maintained until the actual cutting process. This rotation accuracy results in higher yields.
“The Truespin scanner is an easy-to-integrate solution that offers major benefits. Users achieve enormous gains in terms of yield compared to the manageable investment costs,” Creuzberger concludes.
