Södra Wood chooses MiCROTEC’s Goldeneye Transverse

MiCROTEC is proud to announce the collaboration with Södra Wood, as the leading Scandinavian forestry cooperative decides to invest in a MiCROTEC Goldeneye Transverse solution at their mill in Värö.
Södra Wood chooses MiCROTEC’s Goldeneye Transverse

Södra’s Värö sawmill is one of the largest in Sweden and a pioneer in sustainable wood production. It will be equipped with the new Goldeneye Transverse, presented at Ligna 2025 in Hannover. This solution enables four-sided scanning at a record speed of 240 boards per minute.

The Goldeneye Transverse performs strength grading according to EN 14081. This installation uses MiCROTEC’s Reduced Shadow Chain Conveyor, which minimizes occluded areas in the images, making Södra the first to use this patented technology for certified strength grading.

It also allows the grading according to ALS/NGR standards to grade US Number 2 without the need of additional equipment such as end cameras. The highly accurate grading according to the ALS/NGR standards is made possible by the new Pith Finder feature. It is based on data from CT Log, the world’s only CT scanner for logs. This feature improves the calculation of knot displacement by estimating the position of the pith along the entire board. It uses visual information on all four sides of the board to calculate the pith location. The exact detection of the pith location allows for the most accurate knot displacement calculation available on the market

In addition to the Reduced Shadow Chain Conveyor, Södra is the first customer worldwide to implement MiCROTEC’s new AI-powered inpainting feature. This innovative function uses artificial intelligence to reconstruct parts of board images that are obscured by conveyor chains, enabling gapless scanning without the need for additional hardware.

With this installation, Södra continues to lead the way in sawmill technology and digital innovation, while MiCROTEC once again demonstrates its dedication to advancing the future of wood scanning and AI integration, with this project being the 100th Goldeneye Transverse sold. The installation of the project is scheduled to take place by the end of 2025.

“Södra Wood Värö chooses MiCROTEC and Goldeneye because they are at the absolute forefront when it comes to scanner technology for sawn and planed wood products. We look forward to a value-creating collaboration”, says Kerstin Jonasson, Sawmill Manager Södra Wood Värö.
