Founded in 1947 and now led by fourth-generation owners François-Xavier and Marc-Antoine Bonneville, Lepage Millwork, headquartered in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec built a reputation on high-end custom wood windows and doors. With more than 300,000 square feet of production space, Lepage combines the scale to take on complex projects with the flexibility required to deliver highly personalized products.

 

That combination of customization and scale shapes Lepage Millwork’s approach to technology, where the company looks for ways to make technology work around the realities of its production.

A data-driven approach

When Lepage started looking for ways to increase throughput and improve quality, much of the grading process was performed manually, placing significant responsibility on the experience of individual operators.

Lepage began working with MiCROTEC and its partner, System TM, to model a more automated production line using MiCROTEC’s Goldeneye scanner. The team developed a detailed simulation and evaluated the potential return on investment, revealing an important limitation: the technology could deliver only as much value as the information it received. 

In 2025, two MiCROTEC Goldeneye scanners were installed in Lepage Millwork’s rip and crosscut lines. In the years leading up to the installation, the Lepage and MiCROTEC teams worked tirelessly to leverage the available data and MiCROTEC’s technology to meet objectives and ultimately return on investment. That collaboration eventually led to a more customized solution to match Lepage’s highly customized production requirements.

For Lepage, the value of the Goldeneye system goes beyond identifying wood characteristics; it also helps make better production decisions. Goldeneye combines lasers, cameras, X-ray technology, and MiCROTEC Ai to increase yield and achieve the most accurate scanning results, ensuring high and consistent quality. Standardizing quality

One of the most significant changes Lepage has experienced is greater consistency in quality and decision-making.

Previously, operators needed to understand both the machinery and the many grading categories and qualifications. With Goldeneye providing consistent information, operators can focus their expertise on optimization.

Introducing advanced scanning technology into an established production environment was not without challenges. MiCROTEC's support was an important part of the transition. Lepage worked closely with MiCROTEC throughout the implementation, with the teams communicating openly about what was working, what needed to change, and how the system could better fit the company's production reality.

 

That collaborative approach was particularly important because Lepage's application was not a standard implementation.

The project evolved to a level of expertise that allows the system to be continually adapted to changing production requirements. That flexibility is particularly valuable in an environment where Lepage may need to introduce new parts, species, or grades.

 

With more detailed information about the material, Lepage can look ahead and make proactive production decisions. The company can evaluate what is coming into production, test approaches, and work toward yield and value targets.

 

What started as an exploration of scanning technology developed into a collaborative effort to build a more intelligent, consistent, and flexible production environment.
