Optimized Yield and Raw Material Utilization with the New Transverse Goldeneye at Derome

The sawmill in Derome processes approximately 400,000 m³ of spruce annually. Products include construction timber for Swedish and export markets, and raw paneling from sideboards primarily for the Swedish market. Increased raw material costs prompted Derome to evaluate technologies that could enhance detection and optimization processes to increase production capacity and improve material yield.
“Given the increasingly expensive raw material and the large value of products that the scanner has to handle every year, we decided to invest in the scanner that we considered to be the best and have the greatest potential. If the scanner can make detection and optimization just a little better, it is worth a lot.”
For the green sorting line, the selection criteria for scanning technology included accurate shape measurement along the entire board, color cameras, and AI for defect detection and high-speed optimization compatible with their product range.
“The AI network in Goldeneye helps us see and identify defects such as blue stain, rot, cracks, and wormholes. The Goldeneye can see those defects in a very good and clear way” says Elias Brag, Project Manager at Derome.
Operational Impact: Material Optimization
Derome's operational approach involves individual log optimization and sawing, supported by 113 sorting bins. Derome optimizes each log based on finished product specifications, facilitating early cutting and sorting to final dimensions. This includes optimization for standard module and millimeter lengths across various qualities, as well as finger-joint optimization for planks and boards.
„We have MiCROTEC scanners and equipment throughout the flow, starting from the measuring station with Logeye and a Logeye in the saw line. We also have a Truespin so we can saw each log in exactly the right position for that log, followed by a Goldeneye in Secondary processing.”
The implementation of MiCROTEC 's technology has supported Derome in enhancing raw material utilization, increasing overall yield, and streamlining production processes.
